After graduating from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology, Dr. Pournaras pursued his dental studies at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. Deeply committed to continuing education, Dr. Pournaras constantly enhances his knowledge by participating in courses throughout the country. Even as a practicing cosmetic dentist, he takes an active role in continuing education, helping him stay abreast of the latest advances in the dental field.

Aside from his own education, Dr. Pournaras enjoys teaching others. He has lectured at local schools, providing young people with information about a career in dentistry. Dr. Pournaras is privileged to work with master ceramist Wayne Payne, located in Southern California. Their collaboration over the years has produced a genuine friendship and a passion for cosmetics that is evident and unique in each and every case. Together they have partnered over the years and have created thousands of new smiles for our patients.

Dr. Pournaras is a native of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. He currently resides in Columbia with his wife, Kelli, and their two daughters Zoe and Rea.

Dr. Pournaras is among an elite group of cosmetic dentists who have Accredited Membership status by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD). Not all AACD members receive accreditation. In fact, only four percent of AACD members have been granted this honor, and only six in South Carolina. Those few who have met the board's exacting criteria for technical and artistic excellence are granted AACD member accreditation. Dr. Pournaras reached this elite status through a dedication to continuing education and the commitment to produce exceptional dentistry.

Dr Nick is also an honorary member of the Omicron Kappa Upsilon society, a fellow in the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, a member of the American Dental Association, the Academy of General Dentistry, the Academy of Comprehensive Esthetics, the Pierre Fauchard Academy, and the South Carolina Dental Association. He is also involved in the Greater Columbia Dental Association and other local study clubs and dental organizations.

About Our Dental Team

Barbara

Barbara was born and raised in New Jersey, but she and her family have called South Carolina home since 1989. Barbara received a Bachelors Degree in business administration with a minor in accounting from William Paterson University. She has been a part of the Columbia Smiles team since January 1996. Barbara serves as the Treatment Coordinator assisting patients with their insurance claims and financial arrangements. She always looks forward to helping patients maximize their insurance benefits and financially plan to lift their smile.

Amy

Amy grew up in Lexington, South Carolina. She and her husband Willis have been happily married since June 2007. They have been blessed with two beautiful children Karlyn and Parker, and enjoy watching them grow everyday. Amy has been a part of the Columbia Smiles since May 2004 and thoroughly enjoys spending time with all of our patients. As the patient liaison for Columbia Smiles, she supports the team by scheduling all treatments, and marketing our practice. Amy is passionate about photography and takes the portraits of the remarkable transformations that patients receive under the care of our cosmetic dentist, Dr. Nick. She looks forward to more amazing results for patients who visit our Columbia office.

Angie

Angie was born in Asheville, North Carolina and has made Columbia her home. She is married to Joe and they enjoy spending time with their three sons, Whitney, Michael and Hunter. Angie has been a part of the Columbia Smiles team since September 1988. She is Dr. Nick’s chair-side assistant and together they provide expert dental care. Angie has had extensive training in Zoom! teeth whitening and she works as our whitening specialist.

 

Virginia

Virginia is from Orangeburg, South Carolina and has lived in Columbia for over 10 years. She and her husband Larry have one son, Coleman. Virginia is a 2004 graduate of Midlands Technical College with an Associate of Health Science in Dental Hygiene. After graduation, she joined the team at Columbia Smiles in the fall of the same year. Through innovation and technology, Virginia is committed to educating and treating patient by using a fun, relaxed approach to dentistry. She prides herself on not only giving each patient exceptional care, but also establishing relationships that last a lifetime. Virginia is currently pursuing higher education in health care, and hopes to teach others about public health in the future.

Elaine

Elaine and her husband Kevin retired and returned to Columbia after he served twenty-three years in the Air Force. They are the parents of three adult children Brittany, Kevin Jr. and Alex along with their special pet dog Sonic. Elaine received a dental assistant certificate from the Academy of Dental Technology in Virginia Beach. She joined the Columbia Smiles team in August of 2004 as the hygiene coordinator, but currently works as a clinical assistant. She enjoys providing patients with exceptional courtesy to make their dental experience enjoyable.

Kim

Kim is originally from Morehead City, North Carolina, and moved to Columbia in September of 2009. She is a 2009 graduate of Coastal Carolina University, with a Major in Dental Hygiene. She has been with the Columbia Smiles team since April 2011. Kim considers education and prevention the key foundation behind good oral health. She strives to provide quality patient care by incorporating modern medicine with compassion during each individuals visit at Columbia Smiles. Aside from dental hygiene, Kim also holds a license as a Professional Sales Agent, and enjoys helping people attain their goals of home ownership, just as much as she does with health care.
